One of my favorite traditions during the holidays is making cookies and treats…Really I just have a major sweet tooth and look for any excuse to make treats! The holidays are just a perfect time to share all of the treats I love to make. OREO Cookies are delicious any time of year, right?! I’ve even been know to hide a package in the freezer in hopes that no one else in my family discovers them…I’m not that lucky!
Well, did you know OREO Cookies come in so many other flavors than the original…I was shocked at the assortment of flavors and couldn’t wait to get my hands on them to mix up some fun flavors of OREO Cookie Balls. Have you ever made OREO Cookie Balls? They are so easy…and so addictive! I thought it would be fun for my boys to each choose a flavor they would like to try out…Then let daddy be the judge for the best flavor combo!
We used the Official OREO Cookie Ball Recipe as follows:
- 1 pkg (8 oz.) brick cream cheese, softened
- 36 OREO Cookies, finely crushed (about 3 cups)
- 4 pkg. (4 oz. each) semi-sweet baking chocolate, melted
- Make it!
- MIX cream cheese and cookie crumbs until blended.
- SHAPE into 48 (1-inch) balls. Freeze 10 min. Dip balls in melted chocolate; place in single layer in shallow waxed paper-lined pan.
- CUSTOMIZE it with your own ingredient additions or decorative skills.
- REFRIGERATE 1 hour or until firm.
- Share and enjoy!
*For the Peanut Butter OREO Cookie Balls, we mixed Peanut Butter OREO Cookies with plain cream cheese. Then, we coated them with a combination of melted semi-sweet chocolate and peanut butter chips.
*For the Lemon OREO Cookie Balls, we mixed Lemon OREO Cookies with plain cream cheese. Then, we coated them with melted white chocolate with a 1/2 cap full of Pure Lemon Extract.
*For the Twist on the Official Oreo Cookie Ball Recipe, we added a 1/2 cap full of Pure Peppermint Extract.
This is a great recipe for kids to help with! First my boys had the job of crumbling the OREO Cookies. We put the cookies in a bag and crushed them with a rolling pin. Boys love this step!
Then I assisted in mixing the cream cheese and cookie crumbles with the electric mixer…Followed by forming the mixture into approximately 1 inch balls. We formed all the cookie balls and set them on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Into the freezer they went for about 10 minutes.
While the cookie balls were chilling in the freezer, we melted the chocolate in the microwave. We only did one flavor at a time so the chocolate would not harden before we had a chance to dip the cookie balls.
Each ball was dipped, then placed on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Some cookie balls were turned in to cookie pops with the addition of a small cookie pop stick. These were super easy to dip in the chocolate and a lot less messy for little fingers! We placed the cookie ball pops into small cupcake liners and they turned out so cute! All cookie balls received a healthy dose of sprinkles!
This is the season of giving and saying thanks, so I cut out these little leaves, punched holes in them and threaded them onto the cookie pop sticks. I added “Thankful for…” with the intention for someone else to add what they are thankful for. It would also be cute to write “Thankful for you”. It makes them just that much more special when taking them to a Fall Party or Thanksgiving.
We also filled up a little treat box to take over to our neighbors. We have the most amazing neighbors who are more like grandparents to my boys. My boys are always coloring them pictures and making them crafts…I think they will love seeing the boys coming with these little goodies!
Now for the fun part…taste testing! (As though we didn’t taste them along the way…I’m surprised there are any left!) We set out three Cookie Balls and labeled them A, B, C for Daddy to taste them and let us know who’s creation he liked the most…It was a tie! I think he didn’t want to hurt any little boy’s feelings.
