Hi Friends!

I do not claim to be a neat freak or super particular about keeping my home perfectly clean…Unless it’s the holidays.  For some reason, I go into perfectionist mode and like to have everything in my home just that…perfect.  As I decorate, I find myself deep cleaning each room.  I also like to include festive touches in each room too…Maybe a tree, maybe a snowflake… maybe a whole room refresh… Tips for giving your home a Refresh for the Holidays- OneKriegerChick.com

Unfortunately, the room that often is the last to receive any attention is my bedroom.  Big deal, right…No one goes in the bedroom…The door can just be closed.  Wrong- this is the room people go to to leave their coats on the bed or use the bathroom if the other is occupied.  So, this year I decided to start with the bedroom and give it a refresh, then work my way to the front of the house.

Easier said than done…We live in the country and with a husband, three little boys, and two dogs tracking in dirt, my carpets looked awful!   My messmakers   Lately, my little dog had taken to sneaking back to my bedroom to go potty…Grrr!  I spot clean the carpet each time I find a spot, but lately I was noticing a smell.  How embarrassing for people to come over during the holidays to smell that…I actually didn’t realize just how bad they looked until I photographed them.  And to think, I have been cleaning them all along… Messes on the carpet before Before tackling the carpet, I worked from top to bottom to:

  • Dust the ceiling fan and around the crown molding
  • Gave the windows and mirrors a cleaning
  • Dusted the wood furniture and applied lemon oil
  • Washed the curtains, bed skirt, and all bed linens.

Whew…Now for cleaning the carpets…I started by vacuuming, then sprayed a pre-treater onto any soiled area I could find.  I followed the directions on the new Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Carpet Cleaner which were SO easy to follow. It has two modes- Express Clean mode which leaves carpets clean and dry in about an hour! The other setting is Deep Clean Mode, which is what I clearly needed to use.

I used the deep clean setting combined with the Professional Pet Urine Eliminator Formula which is the best Bissell pet machine formula for removing strong odors caused by urine and contains Scotchgard- Yay!

I was really surprised at how lightweight and easy to maneuver it was.  I expected it to be heavy and bulky, but exactly the opposite- It was super easy to use, didn’t take much time at all, and this little guy had a blast chasing the machine…Seriously, the highlight of his day! Below the arrows is what the carpet looked like before cleaning.  Above the arrows is just after cleaning.  The carpet is so much fluffier and it dried in such a short time…just over an hour!  I was so excited with how my room turned out that I cleaned my boys bedrooms using the Pet Oxy Boost Carpet Cleaning Formula.  There were stains I never thought would clean up that disappeared in minutes…So exciting!  And it smelled so good…nothing like boys and dogs!

After tackling cleaning the carpets, I couldn’t resist doing a little holiday decorating.  I typically don’t go overboard on holiday decor in the bedroom, but a few seasonal touches go a long way.  Now that I’ve shared my tips for getting a room into shape for the holidays through cleaning, here are some ideas for bringing seasonal decor into your bedroom for a complete refresh…

Drape a colorful quilt over a chair or the end of the bed or both.   I love old quilts and think they add such a cozy feel.  You may even want to include a spot to prop up your feet, a few holiday books, and a seasonal pillow or two… Master Bedroom refresh for the holidays-16- OneKriegerChick.com-9284

Add a tree- It brings the outdoors inside and if it is a neutral color, it can be left as decor through the winter. Master Bedroom refresh for the holidays-25- OneKriegerChick.com-9303

Include snowflakes and seasonal colors-  Both give a holiday feel, yet can also be used as decor throughout the winter. And a little bonus…Here’s a quick and easy sign to help keep the dirt out of your home during the holidays.  I already have it hanging in my mudroom as a friendly reminder to all the messy boys in my house! Make your own -Please Remove Your Shoes- sign and help keep the mess out of your home this holiday season- OneKriegerChick.com-9582 I created this little printable and turned into a sign that can be made in 5-10 minutes!  Sounds like the perfect craft, right?!

You’ll need:

  • Free Printable (included at end of tutorial)
  • Foam board or chip board
  • Exacto knife
  • Mod Podge
  • Hole punch
  • Ribbon

Make your own -Please Remove Your Shoes- sign- OneKriegerChick.com-9537 I chose to print the printable on cardstock weight paper similar to butcher paper, which really softened the look of the lettering.  I cut it to the desired size and hole punched the holes for the ribbon.  My hole punch would not go through the thickness of the foam board, so I used the Exacto knife to cut little spots in the foam board right behind the punched holes.  I then adhered it to foam board using Mod Podge.  Once it dried, I used an Exacto knife to cut the foam board the same size as the printable.   Make your own -Please Remove Your Shoes- sign-1- OneKriegerChick.com-9540 I threaded a ribbon through the holes…and that’s it!

Go ahead…print it off and make your own Remove Your Shoes Sign

Hi! I never actually ask anyone to remove their shoes, unless it’s my sons friends with mud on their feet. My kids automatically remove their shoes and most of their friends do too. It might be locational, but many homes where I live we naturally remove shoes upon entering. If I’m hosting a party or having multiple people over, I would never expect people to remove their shoes. We live in the country where there is a lot of dirt and dust, so removing shoes helps me immensely in keeping the house a little cleaner. The sign is more of a cute reminder to my kids to remove their boots after playing in the mud. 😉
